At Hakunori’s Kids Park, a “Wooden Sled Experience” (free to participate) was held on 1/25 (Sun.), starting at 10:30 a.m., with two types of sleds available: the Italian-made “SNOW LUGE” (pictured, foreground) and “COLINT” (pictured, background). After receiving instructions on how to ride from Mr. Yoshizaki, a former luge athlete and representative of the Japan Wooden Sled Association, participants set off down the slope.

By lightly pulling up on the rope attached to the front of the sled and shifting body weight, the sled can be steered. It took a few runs to get the feel for it, but before long, turns started to come together. A couple from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured) who took part commented, “The snow was soft today. It’s a bit easier to ride when it’s firmer.” The same event will be held again on 2/15 (Sun.).

At 1:00 p.m., an anglerfish cutting demonstration was held in front of Snow Drop. The 24 kg Itoigawa-caught fish was on display early, and was already drawing attention even before the event began. Mr. Ito, president of Denbei Suisan (pictured), personally carried out the demonstration, explaining each step of the process. It was divided into seven parts—fins, skin, stomach, gills, liver, roe, and meat—with very little going to waste.

After the demonstration, ankō soup (pictured, ¥600, half price with a follow on the official Instagram) and charcoal-grilled dried genge fish (¥300) were sold. Despite the cold, snowy conditions, the popular ankō soup, with its distinctive color, was rich in flavor and absolutely delicious. The next installment of this event is scheduled for 2/21 (Sat.).
