Right now the perfectly groomed Satomi Central Slope (pictured) is in peak condition. The beautifully prepared corduroy stretching all the way to the bottom was so clean that even I—well accustomed to Hakunori—couldn’t help but blurt out, “That’s beautiful!” Under mostly cloudy skies with the occasional thin break in the clouds, light snow was being carried by a weak, cold northerly wind.

I ran into a member of the ski patrol who commented, “The person in charge of grooming the Satomi Central Slope (pictured) today is very skilled, and the quality is exceptional! They added, “If I weren’t working, I’d definitely want to ski it myself!” With few people around, I enjoyed repeating exactly the turns I wanted on the moderately firm, flatly finished powder groomer (one of the perks of the job).

I met a couple living in Hakuba Village (pictured) who said, “We always read your reports. Are we really first on this run? I can’t believe it’s this good and so quiet…” And yes—that’s exactly the charm of a January weekday that isn’t a powder day. After that, the two of them showed off crisp, clean turns on the Highway Course, which featured moderately firm, well-packed powder grooming.

The Rabbit Course and Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) were also groomed firm and smooth, offering outstanding powder pressed into perfect corduroy. The cross course along the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair had been neatly prepared as well. With weak sunshine and low temperatures keeping the snow from softening, the groomed runs stayed firm, while ungroomed areas remained dry and soft, allowing excellent conditions through the day.
