It was a cloudy morning with dry snow flurries drifting down in calm, windless conditions. Although the first wave of this season’s longest and strongest cold spell had eased and temperatures had risen slightly to -9 °C, the cold still felt piercing to the body. Being a January weekday that was “not a powder day,” the atmosphere was relaxed and unhurried, a sharp contrast to yesterday.

Three members of the Osaka Prefecture Ski Association (pictured) told me, “We always read your reports. We’re training for the 42nd Osaka Prefecture Ski Technical Championships being held on 1/24 (Sat.) and 1/25 (Sun.). Our goal is to stay safe, avoid injuries, and aim for a top finish!” Please note that the lower half of the Highway Course will be closed from 1/24 (Sat.) to 1/25 (Sun.) due to the event.

The groomed Kamoshika Course (pictured), Highway Course, Wakaguri Central Slope, and Wakaguri Forest Course all offered moderately firm, excellent powder grooming. Soft undulations had formed in the ungroomed sections, and around 10 cm of light new snow had accumulated. I haven’t had occasion to introduce it yet, but a cross course has been open along the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair since 1/18 (Sun.).

A man from Matsukawa Village in Nagano Prefecture (pictured), whom I met first thing in the morning, said, “I always read your reports. I’m a HAKUBA VALLEY season pass holder, and I’ve been skiing at Hakunori and Cortina yesterday and today. Yesterday was incredible powder, and today the grooming is perfect—my days off lining up with such great conditions has been ideal!” According to the forecast, snow is expected to return again from tonight into tomorrow.
