Light snow was falling in the Base Area early this morning, but had stopped by the time I reached the summit. I ran into two locals from Hakuba Village (pictured) who told me, “We always read your reports. We’re season pass holders at Iwatake, and the runs are better than we expected today—the snow surface feels really good.” Up top, the trees across the Mountain Side were coated in rime ice.

The South Slope, VIEW C, and VIEW D (pictured) all had moderately firm groomed granular snow that skied well. My skis ran fast and edges held cleanly. Meanwhile, the upper section of the Iwatake Snow Park will close from 3/17 (Tue.) through 3/19 (Thu.) for reshaping work ahead of the “Setsuryu” event on 3/20 (Fri., holiday).

A woman from Fukushima (pictured) was playing with her dogs at the dog run in the IWATAKE WHITE PARK. She commented, “I wanted to let the dogs run around here at Iwatake, so we drove over via Niigata,” she told me. With the weekend underway, HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR and the surrounding area were lively with sightseeing visitors.

An instructor from the Hakuba Iwatake Snowboard School, whom I met on the East Slope (pictured), told me, “I always read your reports. The snow surface feels great today. The busy part of the season has finally settled down, so I can start working on my own skiing again.” The East Slope had moderately firm groomed granular snow that offered great edge hold. Sunny Valley had groomed granular snow that softened slightly lower down, with a thin snow spot on the south-facing midsection.
