Iwatake shut down the Sawa Lift yesterday, 3/22 (Sun.), and closed both Sunny Valley (the return route to the base area) and the Sawa Course. As such, five runs remain open as of today: South, East, North (pictured), VIEW C, and VIEW D. The resort saw the second day in a row of calm, spring-like weather.

The North Slope held a moderately firm groomed granular surface that skied well early, but exposure up top had already started to soften the snow. I met a skier from Nagano City (pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports and follow Snownavi on X. The North Slope is skiing best today.”

A couple from Osaka (pictured) commented, “We always read your reports. We’re season pass holders at Iwatake and have skied here nearly 30 days this season. This will probably be our last day.” The East Slope (pictured) started out with a firm groomed granular surface, but it loosened quickly and turned soft within about 30 minutes.
[East Slope]
VIEW C and VIEW D (pictured) offered softened groomed granular snow, with the lower sections narrowing to about half the full course width, though still fully skiable. The South Slope showed the same spring conditions, with a softened groomed granular surface and an expanding area of exposed ground through the midsection. Crews worked to maintain two narrow routes about one groomer-width each this morning, but it’s uncertain whether coverage will hold through the final day on 3/29 (Sun.).
