The five-day Silver Week holiday seemed to fly by. On the final morning, I got up at 3 a.m. and headed out for the Kurobishi 3 Pair Lift Sunrise Service, which began at 5 a.m. I arrived at the parking lot in front of Cafeteria Kurobishi (※Free, capacity 200 vehicles) at 4:30 a.m, and, stepping out of the car, I found myself in the cold predawn darkness beneath a sky full of stars.

At around 5:10 a.m., a band of red began to appear between the clouds and the eastern horizon (first photo). As Hakuba Village’s 5:33 a.m. sunrise approached, the sky gradually shifted to orange. Then, at around 5:40 a.m., the sun finally emerged above the clouds, drawing cheers and applause from the hikers gathered nearby. Comments like, “Wow, that’s beautiful!” and “This is incredible!” could be heard all around.

With the entire mountainside bathed in morning light, I met a couple from Kanagawa Prefecture who told me, “We’re so glad we got to see such a beautiful sunrise. We’re hiking to Mt. Karamatsu and back today.” I made my way slowly toward Happo Pond, stopping every few minutes to look back and take in the scenery around me.

As I climbed higher on the Happo-One Nature Trail, I eventually took off my jacket and continued in just a long-sleeve shirt. At the Shita-no-kanba forest area (pictured), where the maples had turned already yellow, I heard someone say, “It’s like a tunnel of fall colors.” Soon afterward, visitors arriving via the Happo Alpen Line began reaching the area, and both the Happo Pond and the trail quickly grew much busier.

*Fees … Happo Alpen Line round trip / Adults ¥3,500 · Elementary school children ¥2,300 →Adults ¥3,200, children ¥2,000 with early-discount tickets! (No need to exchange at the ticket counter—bring it directly to the gondola gate!)
