In addition to the Happo Alpen Line, the Kurobishi Skyline (formerly known as the Kurobishi Line) opened for the summer season yesterday. I departed from the Kurobishi Parking Lot (space for 200 cars, FREE) at 5:45 a.m., before the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair began operating. The fatigue from climbing the steep slope up to Kurobishi-daira was more than offset by the beautiful morning views accentuated by the cloudless sky.

As I arrived at the famous viewing deck on the shores of Happo-ike, I was met with a fantastic view that met, and maybe even exceeded, my expectations. I heard other hikers in the area exclaiming things like, “Wow, how amazing!” and “I’m so glad I got up early.” The man in the first photo also mentioned to me, “It was well worth the effort to wake up early and climb up the steep path from Kurobishi for this. It’s so beautiful!”

At around 8:00 a.m., clouds began to rise up from the southeast. It’s now the season for alpine flowers, with Chinguruma and Yukiwariso peaking in the area around Happo-ike, and Kugaiso and Chishimagikyo beginning to bloom as well. Nikokisuge day lillies are also starting to flower in the vicinity of Kama-ike, with a number already in full bloom.

Around 8:30, the Happo-One Nature Trail began to grow more lively as visitors began to reach the top via the gondola. I spoke with a man from Mie Prefecture (pictured, right) who told me, “Today I’m taking my two friends up for a day hike up to the summit of Mt. Karamatsu. It’s the first time for both of them. It’s pretty hot, but we’ll make sure to get up and down safely!”
