Iwatake REPORT

2025.08.23Hakuba Iwatake / Partly Sunny

During this year’s Obon holiday period (8/13 to 16), Iwatake welcomed a total of 17,800 visitors—a record high, marking 133% of last year’s crowds! The single busiest summer day on record was also set during the same period, with 5,620 visitors on 8/14 (Thu.). I expected things to settle down a bit this week, but the crowds just kept coming, and by the early morning of 8/23 (Sat.), people were already streaming into HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR (pictured).

At HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR, a line quickly formed at the tip of the floating deck, one of the resort’s most popular photo spots. By around 10:20 a.m., the end of the line had already stretched all the way back to just before the bridge (pictured) to the area. The sky was marked with alternating periods of sunshine and clouds, and the mountaintop area was filled with a bright, festive atmosphere.

I met a family visiting from Hyogo Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “This is our first time at Iwatake. There are so many places where we can play with our dog that we don’t know where to start. Unlike back home in Hyogo where it’s still hot, it’s so cool here, and our dog looks really happy about that!” Standing on the grassy South Slope, I felt a refreshing breeze that carried a hint of autumn.

Since the opening of the Iwatake MTB Park in 2017 and HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR in 2018, Hakuba Iwatake has continued to expand its facilities and activities year after year, adding Iwatake Green Park, the Yoo-hoo! Swing, Mountain Carts, Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori, the Hakuba Giant Swing, and a new gondola. Even this morning, lines were forming at both the Yoo-hoo! Swing and the Hakuba Giant Swing, while the Mountain Carts and Buggy Cruise were also drawing plenty of eager participants.
