With clear skies during the Obon holidays, each of Iwatake’s activities was so popular that lines formed here and there across the resort. This morning, the Mountain Carts, which are operated using only the steering wheel and brakes, seemed to be tricky for some participants, as some veered off course or came to a stop midway, perhaps struggling with the strong vibrations on the trail or the independently operated left and right brakes. On the other hand, those who handled the carts skillfully were all smiles as they cruised down with ease.

A ride on the Buggy Cruise takes you into areas of Iwatake you normally couldn’t reach on foot. It’s a refreshing experience, bouncing along off-road trails while enjoying Iwatake’s uniquely open views and listening to the driver’s commentary and information. Over at the Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK, plenty of riders were also out enjoying the mountain on their bikes.

The “Scenic Relaxation Yoga” sessions, held daily from 8/9 (Sat.) to 8/17 (Sun.) (pictured, free to join, yoga mats provided at no cost), were also very popular. Practicing yoga while gazing at the Northern Alps is an experience unique to Iwatake. When I visited, participants were using “wave rings” for stretching exercises to loosen up their muscles.

The Nezuko-no-mori forest dog run (pictured, free of charge) was another lively spot for dogs and their owners to socialize. With the peak summer heat having eased and the area fully shaded by trees, it felt especially comfortable. One family who brought their dog Rui all the way from Aichi Prefecture told me, “We came out just for the day. We’ve been to Hakuba for skiing before, but this is our first time experiencing Iwatake in summer. After this, we’re going to try the Yoo-hoo! Swing.”
