Iwatake REPORT

2026.07.11Hakuba Iwatake MTB Park, Pt. 2 / Sunny

Once I had grown more comfortable with the speed and handling, I began to enjoy flowing smoothly through the berms (pictured)—the mountain-bike equivalent of banked turns on a ski slope. The key is to choose your line carefully and use the centrifugal force generated through each turn to maintain your speed and momentum. With berms large and small appearing one after another along the Alps Downhill Course, I had to stay focused all the way to the bottom.

Incidentally, Spicy Iwatake offers private tours. In addition to guided rides at Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK, each tour can be tailored to the participants’ interests and ability level, whether that means exploring local sights at the foot of the mountain by city bike or e-bike, taking a skills lesson in the park, or learning the fundamentals of cycling. (※For groups of 1 to 4 people, the cost starts at JPY26,400 for approximately 2.5 hours or JPY39,600 for approximately 5 hours. Bike rental is charged separately.)

The Alps Downhill Course runs 6.9 km from the summit to the foot of the mountain. It takes around 30 to 40 minutes without stopping, or approximately an hour with breaks along the way. Reaching the bottom safely left me grinning with a real sense of accomplishment. For anyone who feels that a full-scale downhill course might be too much to begin with, the Hitotoki Downhill course from the summit to Hakuba Hitotoki-no-Mori is a gentler alternative. (※JPY1,800 per ride, including a hardtail mountain bike, helmet, and other equipment.)
