Early-morning services began on both the Happo Alpen Line and Kurobishi Line on 7/11 (Sat.). The Happo Alpen Line will begin operating at 6:30 a.m. on weekends and public holidays from 7/18 (Sat.) to 8/23 (Sun.), as well as from 8/10 (Mon.) to 8/14 (Fri.). On other days not listed above, running through 8/7 (Fri.), service begins at 7 a.m. Possibly due to the influence of Typhoon No. 9, sudden gusts of wind swept across the mountain from time to time this morning, while broken clouds drifted overhead.

I met a couple from Hakuba Village (pictured, third pair from the bottom) who pointed out, “Hey Snownavi, you can see Mt. Fuji (3,776 m) today. It’s just to the right of that saw-toothed mountain range—Yatsugatake. There are also so many mosengoke flowering near the toilets by the No. 2 Cairn that it looks like a whole ‘mosengoke Street’ has appeared,” they added with a laugh. Incidentally, the toilets near the No. 2 Cairn have been open since 7/9 (Thu.).

Perhaps encouraged by the promising forecast, a steady stream of hikers and climbers were making their way toward Happo Pond despite it being a weekday. “We’re heading to Goryu Sanso today. The wind is strong, so we’ll be careful,” commented two visitors from Hyogo Prefecture. Hoping to find some cool shade, I continued on to Shita-no-kanba.

I ran into a couple from Azumino City (pictured) in the Shita-no-kanba forest, where a refreshing breeze moved through the trees, and they told me, “We met you at Mt. Kotomi during the autumn foliage season last year. It’s much hotter than we expected today—and we’re really starting to feel it.” The strong winds that had been blowing since early morning began to ease at around 10 a.m.
