Shiga REPORT

2024.02.26160cm / Snow Flurries

Since the rain that was falling on our last report on 2/21 (Wed.), the weather has been cold and more typical of February. The Diamond Slope and Rabbit Course (pictured) were groomed early in the morning, and had interesting conditions with a mix of dry, fresh snow and granular snow, as well as firm powder snow depending on the area. Because it was a weekday with few people, I was able to draw fresh tracks to my hearts content on the smooth slopes.

On the even, undulation-free surface of the Diamond Slope (pictured), my eyes were drawn to skiers taking advantage of the slope’s steep angle to gain impressive speed. The light snow that had been falling since the morning stopped at 8:30 a.m., and blue skies appeared overhead…. However, within five minutes, clouds that had been carried in by the strong northwesterly wind began to bring fine snow yet again.

The upper portion of Ichinose Family’s Front Slope (pictured) and Terakyo’s LIPS were groomed overnight, while the lower portion of the Front Slope was groomed in the morning. Therefore, the upper portion of the Front Slope, which was shrouded in thick fog, had about 5 cm of new snow sitting atop a groomed surface that was a mix of granular snow and dry fresh snow, while the lower part had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow base marked with a few hard spots here and there.

I met three people from Mie Prefecture at Terakoya, who told me, “Yesterday we skied at Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort, but the gondola stopped running due to the strong winds. The snow quality is really good here at Terakoya this morning!” There were a few hard patches, but the groomed Philosophy and Eternal slopes had excellent powdery conditions overall! My edges gripped and my skis slid so well that I wanted to spend all day lapping the area via the Terakoya Quad.
