Sugadaira REPORT

2023.02.2580cm / Snow Clouds

When I arrived at the Oku Davos free parking lot at around 7:00 a.m., the thermometer I had on hand read a brisk -7°C. I overheard multiple conversations where people were talking about how cold it was in Sugadaira. The Oku Davos No. 1 Beginner Course (pictured) had about 2cm of smooth, fresh snow on top of a groomed, wet snow surface that had a powdery feel. My skis slid well across the gentle slope and I enjoyed some nice, comfortable turns.

I spoke with a season pass-holding couple (pictured) from Nagano’s Ueda City, who were the first to board the Oku Davos No. 1 Triple, and they told me, “We come here every weekend to ski. On a cold and windy day like today, the hooded No.1 Triple lift is especially comfortable.” Dry snow was fluttering along on the occasionally strong gusts of the northwest wind.

The trees were caked in white rime ice, while the sky was dark and gloomy. That combination made for an eerily beautiful atmosphere. I traveled under the Oku Davos No. 1 Triple going from the Oku Davos No. 1 Beginner Course to the No. 1 Intermediate Course (pictured), and found about 2 cm of fresh snow on top of the hard-packed, groomed wet snow surface. Despite being a weekend the slopes were uncrowded, and I never had to worry about skiing too close to other people.

The Oku Davos No. 1 Beginner Course (pictured) and the Oku Davos Family Course (right side of photo) had a fun, friendly atmosphere with many groups and families. In other news, Sunday, February 26, is “Yuki no Hi” (Snow Day), and event where you have the chance to win a season pass for next season.
