On the trail from the Ichinokoshi Mountain Lodge (elevation 2,700m) to Mt. Oyama (3,003m), the route is clearly marked with color-coded guides—red for the ascent (pictured) and yellow for the descent. Thanks to this system, hikers going up and those coming down don’t cross paths on the same track. It made an effort to focus on not accidentally dislodging rocks as I continued to climb upward.
[Ichinokoshi to Sannokoshi]

After 40 minutes of climbing from Ichinokoshi, I reached Sannokoshi (elevation 2,885m) and took a short break before tackling another steep section. Along the trail up to Ichinokoshi, I was cheered on by blooming alpine flowers such as miyama kinpoge buttercups (pictured), miyama akinokirin-so, Hakusan ichige, and miyama rindo. Between Ichinokoshi and Sannokoshi, iwa-gikyo and miyama miminagusa (first photo, near the hiker’s feet) added to the scenery and lifted my spirits.

The most breathtaking moment was the view looking back toward the Murodo area (pictured)—you can see Mikurigaike Pond in the distance at the center. “The lingering snow makes such interesting zebra-like patterns,” commented a fellow hiker I met along the way. And when the exhaustion from the steep climb must’ve been all over my face, a descending hiker kindly encouraged me with a smile: “You’re almost at the summit—keep going!”
[Ichinokoshi to Sannokoshi]

At 11:40 a.m.—2 hours and 40 minutes after leaving Murodo Terminal—I arrived at the summit shrine of Mt. Oyama. I debated whether to pay the ¥700 shrine offering fee or buy a drink, and in the end, I went for a bottle of Coke from the shop (JPY700), which turned out to be the most delicious one I’ve ever had. The shop also sells canned beer (JPY800), cup noodles (JPY700), goshuin temple stamps (JPY700), and assorted protective charms. After a short break soaking in the incredible views, I continued on toward Mt. Onanji. (*To be continued in the Mt. Onanji report.)
