Tateyama REPORT

2025.07.22Tateyama Onanji-yama / Partly Cloudy

This Tateyama climb marked the second installment in our “100 Famous Mountains of Japan” series, following the reports on Mt. Norikura. Tateyama refers collectively to three peaks—Mt. Oyama (3,003m), Mt. Onanji (3,015m), and Fuji-no-Oritate (2,999m)—with Mt. Onanji being the highest and one of the mountains I had most looked forward to visiting. In contrast to the bustling crowds at Oyama, things became suddenly peaceful as I proceeded past the summit shrine of Mt. Oyama (pictured).

The ridgeline walk from Mt. Oyama to Mt. Onanji takes about 30 minutes, with a few gentle ups and downs along the way. The wide-open views and accumulated fatigue made it easy to let my guard down—and at one point, I slipped a bit on the loose gravel, which gave me quite a scare. I spoke with a couple from Aichi Prefecture who shared, “The climb up to Oyama was tough. We’re staying at the Tsurugi Sanso hut tonight and heading to Mt. Tsurugi tomorrow.”

I reached the summit of Mt. Onanji (pictured) at 12:20 p.m. While the grandeur of the surrounding 3,000-meter peaks was awe-inspiring, what truly moved me was the breathtaking emerald-green view of Kurobe Lake—something I hadn’t been able to see from the summit of Mt. Oyama. Near the peaceful and scenic summit of Mt. Onanji, I enjoyed a quiet, leisurely lunch alone.

I began my descent at 12:30 p.m. (pictured is the Mt. Onanji Rest Area, which has a shop and restrooms). Along the way at Ichinokoshi, a staff member from Ichinokoshi Mountain Lodge recognized me and said, “Hey, aren’t you from Snownavi? Our homemade curry here (¥1,500) is highly recommended. It’s available for lunch too, so please stop by next time.” Just like on the way up, I refreshed myself with the cold water from Tateyama Tamadono Fountain and, while waiting for the Tateyama Tunnel electric bus to depart, I took the opportunity to buy some souvenirs.
