Tateyama REPORT

2025.10.10Tanbo-Daira /Sunny

Spectacular autumn colors have arrived. Around 9/27 (Sat.), the foliage around Murodo-daira (elevation 2,450m) had begun to fade, while the peak colors shifted lower down to Tanbo-daira (pictured, elevation 1,700–2,000m). I spoke with a staff member at Daikanbo, who told me, “Both here and at Midagahara (elevation 1,930m), the best viewing for fall leaves peaked around 10/3 (Fri.).”

This year the mountain foliage across Shinshu (Nagano) has been especially beautiful, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is no exception—the colors are absolutely spectacular. Today, I looked up at the slopes glowing with brilliant autumn hues from the Kurobe-daira Panorama Terrace, admired views framed by brilliant red nanakamado (Japanese rowan trees), gazed down at the fiery ridges below while riding the Tateyama Ropeway, and enjoyed a sweeping vista of Tanbo-daira dyed in vibrant golds and reds from Daikanbo (pictured). The landscape was stunning from every angle.

From the Unjo Terrace at Daikanbo, I was able to admire the autumn colors up close as they lit up the jagged rock faces nearby (pictured). This morning the temperature was a chilly 10°C both at Kurobe-daira and Daikanbo, but thanks to the windless calm and sunny weather, it still felt comfortable as long as you layered appropriately.

A couple from Hyōgo Prefecture (pictured), who were taking commemorative photos, told me, “This is our first time in Tateyama. Yesterday we climbed Mt. Oyama, and the views from the summit were absolutely incredible with the perfect weather!” Down at Kurobe Dam (elevation 1,470m), where the foliage is just beginning to change, a staff member at the information desk on the first floor of the rest house said, “It depends on the weather, but the autumn colors around Kurobe Dam should reach their peak in about two weeks.”
