Rainy weather dominated from 9/10 (Wed.) to 9/14 (Sun.), and during that time the air turned noticeably cooler, with morning temperatures at the top of Iwatake dropping below 20°C by 8:30 a.m. After the three-day weekend, visitors were slow to arrive today, giving Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori a calm, quiet feel. The crisp, refreshing air made me want to move, so I put my camera down and played a little on the slackline (pictured, foreground) before heading on my way.

Two visitors from Aichi Prefecture (one of whom is pictured) told me, “Yesterday we went to Kamikochi. Afterward, we stayed overnight at From P HAKUBA and today we’re spending the day here at Iwatake. The Hakuba Giant Swing was scary when we were being pulled up, but once we began swinging, it was so much fun!” Since it was quiet, both the Yoo-hoo! Swing and the Hakuba Giant Swing were accepting on-site registration instead of requiring tickets from the vending machines at the Guide Center.

A woman visiting from Tokyo (pictured) told me, “I’m staying in Hakuba for two nights and have already been to Oide Park and Happo Pond. This is my first time horseback riding, but it’s not as difficult as I expected!” At Iwatake, you can enjoy a guided lead-rein ride (one lap, 220 meters, ¥2,000) or go for the full 60-minute horse trekking course (¥15,000, reservations required).

As the sun grew stronger throughout the day, the shade felt wonderfully refreshing. One of the most comfortable spots is the Glacier Deck (pictured) tucked just behind HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR. From now through early November, it’s the perfect place to relax with a treat from THE CITY BAKERY while watching the colors of the trees gradually change throughout the autumn season.
