As a low-pressure system passed through the area on 9/20 (Sat.) to 9/21 (Sun.), the weather turned noticeably cooler, and even at the foot of the mountain it felt like the season for wearing a jacket or fleece in the mornings and evenings. At the summit of Iwatake, the crisp autumn air made it comfortable throughout the day. From the 9:00 a.m. opening, the “Buggy Cruise” was already in full swing, offering both the thrill of off-road riding and sweeping mountain views (*Approx. 15 minutes, JPY2,000 for adults, JPY1,000 for children ages 4 to elementary school, free for pets).

Autumn in Iwatake not only brings comfortable weather, but also more predictable skies—meaning better chances of seeing the mountains clearly. Visitors showed up slowly today, and even HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR, which is usually bustling right after opening, remained quiet for a while. On the tip of the deck, people could be seen leisurely taking commemorative photos, and changing poses and angles in pursuit of the perfect shot.

At Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori’s CHUMS RIDGE, a family visiting from Kanagawa (pictured) told me, “We’ve been staying in Hakuba since 9/22 (Mon.). The weather today, our last day, has been perfect and is leaving us with the best memories!” Not only this family, but the couple sitting next to them also had their dog along for the visit.

At the mountaintop beech forest, you can buy big marshmallows (¥500 each) from a food truck and roast them over the fire pit inside the tipi tents. A young boy from Matsumoto City (pictured, right) happily bit into one, saying, “The toasted part is crispy and delicious!” Right beside him, his older sister (pictured, left) called out, “Careful, it’s hot… wait, give me a bite too!”
