Sugadaira REPORT

2024.01.1255cm / Sunny

Radiative cooling brought on by clear skies sent the early morning temperature plunging down all the way to -10°C. The skier’s right side of Shirogane Schwarz (pictured) was groomed to the with of 2 to 4 grooming machines, and had a hard packed wet snow surface. My skis slid well on the artificial snow that did a good job of covering the slope, and there were no exposed bushes to be seen.

In contrast to Ura Taro Family, which is the most popular area in Sugadaira, Shirogane Schwarz (pictured) was like a quiet, secret spot located on the backside of Mt. Ura Taro, where skiers were able ski without worrying about their surroundings. Junior high school students from Saitama Prefecture and others were taking skiing lessons on the gentle, firmly groomed wet snow surfaces of Shirogane Karamatsu and Shirogane Rinkan courses.

I spoke with a local skier from Ueda City (pictured) who told me, “I love your site! On days when I work the night shift, I ski in the morning and then go to work.” Conditions were good on Tengu A (pictured), where the course, including the large cure in the center of the run, was groomed with a moderately firm wet snow base that felt powdery. The Tengu Rinkan area had a hard, groomed wet snow surface.

Pine Beak’s Omatsuyama Go-no-Hara Course (pictured) and Omatsuyama Family Course also had a powder-like, groomed wet snow surface. The area from the upper portion of Omatsuyama’s SAJ-certified Champion Course to the Dogleg Course is currently hosting the “2024 MACEARTH Pine Beak Cup Sugadaira Kogen Youth Technical Ski Championships” from 1/10 (Wed.) to 1/12 (Fri.).
