Sugadaira REPORT

2024.01.1660cm / Snowy

The strong winter pressure pattern over the area brough strong westerly winds and vigorously falling snow. The temperature dropped as low as -9°C, and the wind was so cold that as I helf my camera my fingers became instantly numb. Although visitors were generally slow to arrive this morning, the slopes were filled with children taking ski lessons, creating a friendly atmosphere.

I spoke to a man from Chiba Prefecture (pictured), who was the first to reach Oku Davos’ First Advanced Course. He told me, “I wanted to go to the Yuzawa area, but the highway was closed. I heard Sugadaira was good from a friend, so I came out here for the first time.” The groomed part of the Oku Davos First Advanced Course had a well-packed powder snow surface topped with 1 to 8 cm of dry fresh snow, and was easy to ski.

I enjoyed cruising through the 15 to 20 cm of fluffy fresh snow on the ungroomed area on the skiers’ right side towards the middle of the Oku Davos First Advanced Course. (*There were a few long grasses protruding through the snow.) The Oku Davos First Beginner Course (pictured), which is a 1,300-meter-long course located deep in the resort, also had a firm, groomed powder snow surface covered with 1 to 8 cm of fresh snow, and no exposed bushes or thin snow cover.

Similarly, the Oku Davos Family Course (pictured) had 5 to 8 cm of fresh snow on on a firmly groomed powder snow base. In other news, the Oku Davos Snow Park has entered its Sanzoku-yaki Spicy Ramen” into a ski resort food competition. This offering uses curry powder as the secret ingredient of the Shinshu-specialty food Sanzoku-yaki!
