Sugadaira REPORT

2024.01.1865cm / Partly Cloudy

Morning comes quick to Sugadaira, and not to be outdone, I woke up early today and arrived at the Pine Beak parking lot at 6:30 a.m. The thermometer on hand read 0°C, and a park digger I spoke with told me, “I think the weather will hold up today.” Not long after, the clouds began to slowly dissolve, revealing the first bit of blue skies.

GO-no-Hara (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface with a powdery feel, and I was able to set my edges and ski at a good speed. I had a conversation with a para skier who joined me on the Omatsu No. 1 Quad during the early morning operation period who told me he was practicing on the Omatsuyama SAJ-Certified Champion Course. He added, “It’s pretty warm for Sugadaira and the slopes are soft.”

There was a competitive atmosphere hanging over GO-no-hara this morning, so it was no surprise when I ran into Mao Nakazawa of the slopeside lodge & restaurant Yawataya. She told me her aim is to become a world champion, and that she finds that Pine Beak offers the perfect training environment. She also mentioned that she would be competing in the Far East Cup, which kicks off in Korea on 2/1 (Thurs.), and that she would appreciate support. (Oh, and congratulations on reaching your crowdfunding goal!) “We headed to the Omatsuyama Alpine Course together afterwards, which felt very much like a secret spot.

Conditions were good on Holiday (pictured) thanks to the moderately-firm, groomed wet snow. More and more blue sky gradually opened up, and a group of students (pictured) on a school excursion from Tokyo could be seen smiling and commenting about how much snow there was, how excited they were, and how much fun they were having.
