Sugadaira REPORT

2024.01.2265cm / Mostly Cloudy

Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is a mountain ski area featuring broad slopes on gentle, hill-like terrain. Even on this cloudy day, the wide-open atmosphere of the resort seemed to naturally calm and deepen my breathing. I spoke with a lift worker at Stage 3 who told me, “It started snowing around noon on Saturday, but unfortunately it rained on Sunday.”

I was concerned about the effects the rain would have on the slopes, but there were no exposed bushes to be seen on the groomed slopes I skied today: Omote Davos East, Beginner Course, Ura Davos Heart-no-Mori, Ura Taro Family East & West, and Ura Taro Schi Heil. The Omote Davos Beginners Course (pictured) had a firm, groomed wet snow surface.

Schi Heil, which opened on 1/20 (Sat.), was groomed with a hard, wet snow base. I ran into three people from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured), who commented, “The snow is so hard! We’re going to take the lift to Oku Davos after this, and for lunch, we’re going to try the Indian curry at Restaurant Wing, because we heard it’s really good.”

The Ura Taro Family East and West slopes were being groomed until just before the start of business, and both had firm, wet snow surfaces. The Ura Davos Heart-no-Mori, Omote-Davos, and Schneider slopes were all filled with students on school excursions, and by 10:00 a.m., the firm snow surfaces had begun to soften and moisten.
