Sugadaira REPORT

2024.02.08115cm / Sunny

With clear blue skies above, the morning temperatures dropped all the way down to -9℃ due to radiative cooling, and the occasional light wind from the north made my fingers numb as I operated my camera. The groomed powder snow surfaces on the Omote Davos West (pictured) and East courses, where the grooming machines were at work until just before the start of business, were moderately firm, and I could hear that perfect powder squeak as I walked.

About half of the Oku Davos First Advanced Course was groomed, with firm wet snow that had the feeling of powder. The Oku Davos First Intermediate Course (pictured), the Oku Davos Second and Third Courses, and the Oku Davos Family Course were all groomed from top to bottom, with moderately firm powder snow bases. The Oku Davos First Beginner Course had moderately soft, groomed powder snow.

I spoke with a pair of instructors at the SnowQuest Ski School (pictured, on the ends), with one of them telling me, “I love your site! I had my pictured taken by Snownavi on the Neko-dake Downhill before. Thanks again for that. The weather and snow quality are fantastic today.” By the way, the Snow Cat Tour, which takes you up to the summit of Neko-dake is unfortunately not available this season due to mechanical issues.
[Omote Davos East Course]

Omote Davos Panorama had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface, while the Omote Davos Beginner Course and Ura Davos Skyline Course (pictured) had softer wet snow that felt more like powder. Ura Davos Wave had similar “powdery” wet snow, but it was more well-packed. Each of the above courses were easy to ski. In other news, the “Snow Festa in Sugadaira Kogen” event will be held on 2/11 (Sun.) at a special venue on the Ura Taro Slope! This is a collaborative
event between winter sports and motorsports, and there will be an exhibition of motorcycles scheduled to participate in the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Race, goods for sale, snow scoot displays, and more.
