Shiga REPORT

2024.02.13240cm / Sunny

On this beautiful, clear and windless morning, I spoke with two people from Tokyo (pictured), who commented, “The broad slopes make it easy to board! We’re staying at the Shiga Palace Hotel tonight through a tour booked with Travel Inn, and looking forward to the hot spring bath.” The Second Beginner Course (pictured) was in excellent groomed condition with a moderately firm powder snow surface that my skis slid well across despite the gentle slope angle.

I met a skier from Yamanashi Prefecture (pictured) at the landing point of the Third Quad, who greeted me saying that he was a fan of Snownavi. He continued, “I live in Nakano City and ski mainly in the Hokushin area in winter. Snownavi is very informative and I enjoy reading about resorts I haven’t been to. Please keep up the good work!” (*The mountain in the foreground is Mt. Kasadake and the Northern Alps are visible in the background.)

Visitor turnout was slow on the first weekday after the three-day weekend, and there was fresh corduroy on the Third Beginner Course (pictured) for quite a while. While riding the Third Quad back up, I couldn’t help but smile as I looked down and saw the tracks I had made. The Third A Course was ungroomed, with areas of rough and hard-packed snow, but overall the conditions were soft and powdery, making it a manageable challenge.

The First A Course and Shirakaba Slope (pictured), both located along the First Pair and used for night skiing, had well-packed, groomed powder snow bases. The Umanose Course had moderately firm groomed powder snow early on that firmed up even more from the middle to the end. It was quite cold around 7:00 a.m., but by 10:00 a.m. the sun made things feel nice and warm.
