Shiga REPORT

Although the Maruike, Hasuike, and Sunvalley areas are comparatively small in terms of slope area, you can still spend a whole day here enjoying the views, atmosphere, and variety of slopes that take advantage of the terrain. The main slope of Sunvalley (pictured) is an intermediate slope with a maximum gradient of 25° that runs toward the frozen Biwa Pond. This morning it was groomed with powder snow that was packed so tightly you could feel it crunch and hear it squeak when you stepped on it.

Maruike and Hasuike have a number of short courses suitable for first timers and beginners. Today the Maruike C Course, Maruike B Course, and Maruike Second Slope (pictured) were each groomed with moderately firm powder snow surfaces. (*Maruike A was closed.) Maruike Snowland will be open for the three-day weekend starting tomorrow.

I spoke with the father of a family from Nagoya, who told me, “Conditions are great for skiing. Today is the first day of our trip to Shiga Kogen. Tomorrow I think we’ll go check out Yokoteyama.” This morning, there was almost no snow on the road from the Kamibayashi Chain Fastening and Removal Area to the Sunvalley parking lot (400 car capacity). There was no ice on the Loop Bridge either, so the driving was safe and relaxed.

The Hasuike Junior Course (pictured) and Hasuike A Course had moderately firm, groomed powder snow surfaces that were easy to ski. I chatted with an instructor who was leading a group of students from Tochigi Prefecture on a school excursion, and was told, “We came to Shiga Kogen yesterday for a two-day, one-night trip. The snow quality is very good, and the students seem to be enjoying themselves.”
