Hakuba Sanosaka Ski Resort officially opened as scheduled today, 12/19 (Fri.), with all four lifts operating and all courses open for skiing and riding. Paradise featured machine-groomed wet snow that was firmly set with an exceptionally flat finish, and with clear blue skies and calm, windless conditions, it was a perfect day to enjoy the first runs of the season.

The “Snow Friends Park” (pictured) turned out even better than the illustrations suggested. Easily accessed via a single ride on the 2nd Quad from in front of Castor Plaza, this area is ideal not only for practicing skiing and snowboarding but also for general snow play and sledding. In addition to one of Hakuba Sanosaka’s standout features—its minimal exposure to wind—the newly renovated Café Capella sits right outside the frame of the photo, making it a convenient and comfortable spot for a break.

The neatly groomed Carving Slope (pictured) had a firm, wet snow surface. I spoke with a Hakuba Valley season pass holder from Omachi City who was first in line for the 6th Pair lift, and they told me, “I came today because it’s opening day.” There were a few icy sections in the shaded middle part of the slope, but advanced riders took it in stride, carving powerfully with confident edge control.

I met another skier at the top of the 3rd Quad who told me, “I always read your reports. There’s some grass showing, but no rocks, so I felt at ease.” I also had a chat with an instructor from Kashimayari Ski School, who said, “I always follow Snownavi. Today is absolutely perfect!” By around 9 a.m., as the surface loosened slightly, edge hold improved noticeably.
