On both 2/14 (Sat.) and 2/15 (Sun.), the first 400 guests to purchase lift tickets will receive a chocolate gift from the friendly staff at the ticket counter. You can just imagine me, a middle-aged reporter, carefully lining up those chocolates on the snow for a photo, trying not to damage the pristine surface (pictured). And as you might expect from a high-elevation inland resort, the thermometer in the parking lot read -8.3°C at 7:30 a.m.

I met the father of two brothers who happily showed me their chocolates (one pictured) who said, “I always read your reports. We’re skiing here today and tomorrow. The groomed surface is really beautiful.” Blackbeat featured well-compacted packed powder, and before long, clean, graceful tracks began appearing on the pristine surface one after another.

Among the morning riders, the one standing out with especially sharp turns was Hayate Kawada (pictured), a rider for Gray Snowboards and an athlete supported by Rescue Wax. “With the recent warmer temperatures, I was a bit worried about the slope conditions, but the grooming is excellent and it feels fantastic out there,” he told me.

At the top of Drago, the snow park was set with a 4 m rail, a box, a down rail, and a small kicker. “The view from here is great, too. Everyone who reads Snownavi, please come and ride with us!” said one of the park diggers. Drago and Gomarugo (pictured) both featured well-compacted groomed snow with a moist, powder-like feel. Today brought clear skies, no wind, and perfect conditions for a full day on the slopes.
