Because Ninja Snow Highland is closed on weekdays, Saturdays become something special every week. Between 15 and 20 cm of new snow had accumulated on the ungroomed Alekoko (pictured) and Sasuke runs by yesterday. Strong cold temperatures continued throughout the week, so the snow was light and dry, and even the shallow undulations of the base remained covered in pleasantly soft powder.

What’s more, the courses along the NINJA Lift all face west and spend long hours in the shade, which helps the good conditions last even longer. Drago (pictured) had a moderately soft packed powder base, and there, as well as on Blackbeat, Gomaruco, and Shinko, my edges bit firmly, skis ran fast, and I could carve exactly the turns I wanted.

On Shine (pictured), which follows a gully-like terrain, grooming was limited to the valley bottom, resulting in a moderately soft surface. In the ungroomed sections (pictured), just like on Alekoko, 15 to 20 cm of light new snow had piled up. Right after lift operations began, the powder on Alekoko and Sasuke was snapped up first, with riders starting to move into Shine a short while later.

Smile Snowboard School’s “Masterkey Snowboard Camp” is being held over two days on 1/31 (Sat.) and 2/1 (Sun.). Pro rider Sho Tsunoda (pictured, front left) explained, “This is a special camp where you can experience multiple riding styles over two days. I’ll be in charge of the alpine lessons, while pro rider Masato Tsuruta (pictured, front right) will handle the freestyle sessions.”
