It’s not just the marsh areas—right now, the Yase-one ridge (pictured) and the trails connecting the marshes are also beautifully vibrant with flowers and summer greenery. This morning, I walked from the back of the Ukishima Marsh along the mostly shaded eastern route to the lower part of the Yase-one ridge. Along the way, I spotted gozen tachibana and maizuru-so in full bloom at my feet.

“Wow, what a nice breeze—so refreshing! What’s the name of this cute little yellow flower with the bubbly clusters?” asked a hiker who had come along the same trail. (To which I replied with a triumphant grin, “That’s Hakusan ominaeshi!”). Along the southern slope of the Yase-one ridge (first photo), a beautiful array of flowers was in bloom, including Hakusan ominaeshi (pictured), akabana shimotsuke-so, oba-giboshi, oreijin-so, kugaisho, and hotsutsuji.

A large cluster of kinugasa-so (pictured) was blooming in the area between the Kusukawa river and Ukishima Marsh, where the snow lingered late this year, and around the Fuketsu wind cave. Nikko-kisuge daylilies and watasuge cotton grass continued to be at their best in both the Watasuge Marsh (fourth photo) and Ukishima Marsh. Other flowers also in full bloom included Ibuki toranoo, karamatsu-so, kuruma yuri, and miyama kinpoge.

I spoke with a man from Yamanashi whom I met at the Watasuge Marsh, and he told me, “This is my first time visiting the Tsugaike Nature Park. There are so many flowers in bloom—it’s truly beautiful. Next time, I think I’ll try going to Hakuba Oike.” When the mist, carried in on the light southern breeze, rolled in, it suddenly felt much cooler, making me forget all about the heat of the valley down below.
