The day started with crystal-clear blue skies, and as such, radiative cooling had dropped the temperature all the way down to –7°C. On the Panorama Course first thing this morning, the new snow from yesterday had been pressed into a moderately soft, groomed powdery surface. On both the north and south sides of the Kokusai 3 Pair (pictured), the generous width of the slope made it possible to link wonderfully smooth, satisfying turns over and over again.

On the south-side route at Usagidaira, soft plumes of snow rose up from the moderately firm, groomed powder surface with every turn. Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the groomed powder was even softer than at Usagidaira, and I enjoyed long, flowing runs on the east-side slope beneath the lift (pictured).

By the way, because strong winds forced all lifts to shut down around 10:30 a.m. yesterday, there was about 20cm of new, untouched snow remaining in the ungroomed areas. This morning, many early visitors headed for that fresh snow along the Kurobishi 3 Pair, beside the Alpen Quad, and into Sodeguro, which meant the slopes along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) were left with beautifully clean, untracked surfaces.

For reference, the Riesen Grat Course at the very top of the ski area (pictured) lies within the Chubu-Sangaku National Park, where tree cutting is restricted, and as a result it cannot open until there is a substantial amount of snow. Meanwhile, icy conditions on roads at the base are becoming increasingly common in the mornings and evenings. Black ice can also occur, so please take extra care when driving.
