The dense snowfall that had been coming down earlier in the morning eased around 8:00 a.m., and when the Super Quad (pictured) started running at 8:30 a.m., sunlight was breaking through the clouds with patches of blue sky appearing overhead. The intense cold continued, and Paradise, Beginner A and B, Utopia, and the lower section of Giant all had groomed packed powder that was moderately soft and very easy to ski.

Champion (pictured), with its moderately soft packed powder base, had picked up 15 to 20 cm of fluffy new snow. With many guests heading straight for the neighboring World Cup course in search of deeper powder on their first run, Champion was relatively quiet, allowing me to take my time and enjoy powder that was not too deep and not too shallow.

Once the powder on the Super Quad–accessed slopes became tracked out, attention naturally shifted to the tree run areas. In the gully terrain of SAWA (pictured), the fresh snowfall measured around 20 to 30 cm. With no hardness in the base and just a slight bit of weight to the snow, it delivered a pleasantly buoyant, floating sensation.

Two guests from Aichi Prefecture told me, “We always read your reports! We skied in Hakuba the last two days. Since the Joshinetsu Expressway (*see note below) reopened after being closed, we came to Madarao today. SAWA was insanely fun!” Sky View (pictured), which looked magical with rime ice, along with Sky Love and Crystal, all featured well-set packed powder that felt nice and supportive underfoot.
