Checking the official live camera, the snow that began around 7:00 p.m. last night had already piled up to over 40 cm. When I arrived at the Super Quad loading area at 8:00 a.m., there was already a line stretching about 50 meters (I was too late!). I dropped in first on the ungroomed middle section of Giant (pictured), where knee-deep, fluffy fresh snow—around 40 to 50 cm—delivered an excellent start to the morning.

A couple from Saitama Prefecture who had just skied the same run told me, “We hit the base a few times, but the fresh snow was deep and felt great! We’re heading up the No. 13 Single Lift next to aim for the top.” When the No. 13 Single started running around 9:20 a.m., I could see the smooth, untouched upper part of Crystal (pictured, top right), which had me buzzing with anticipation.

As the lead group began dropping into the completely ungroomed, perfectly smooth upper portion of Crystal, their excited shouts echoed through the air, quickly followed by cheers from riders still on the No. 13 Single. Upper Crystal had no issue with bottoming out at all, and the 40 to 50 cm of soft, fluffy powder delivered an outstanding floating sensation.

An Australian man I had met earlier on 1/6 (Tue.) laughed and said, “This makes the third time we’ve run into each other. Madapow—very nice!” Even on the midsection of Crystal, where about 20 cm of light new snow sat atop soft, groomed powder, I was able to enjoy that buoyant, floating feel. By around 9:00 a.m., the snowfall eased and sunlight began to break through.
