After heavy snowfall on 1/8 (Thu.) & 1/9 (Fri.) added even more snow, conditions were dialed in perfectly for the first day of the three-day January holiday weekend. I kicked things off under clear skies, with smooth turns on beautifully groomed packed powder slopes. As of yesterday, the upper tree areas such as Adventure Isle, Powder Wave 2, and Powder Theater, along with SAWA 1, have also opened for skiing and riding.

I met a father from Tokyo (pictured) who said to me, “I always read your reports! You can see the Sea of Japan so clearly from here. I’m about to drop my child off for a ski lesson.” The clouds that had been hanging around at around 8:30 a.m. cleared by about 9:00 a.m., opening up to reveal a beautiful blue sky.

Today, the Free Ride Park had six features set up: a 4m kicker, a 7m kicker, a 3m tabletop, a mound, a 6m rail, and a 6m box. A skier from Tokyo I rode the Super Quad with told me, “I always read your reports. The groomers are soft and really easy to ski today.”

I crossed paths with four guests from Ishikawa Prefecture (pictured), who greeted me with the familiar phrase, “We always read your reports!” They added, “We’re staying at Lodge Raven starting today and plan to ski Madarao for two full days. The snow quality is amazing. We’re going to head back to our car in the No. 7 Parking Lot to gear up, then go straight into the tree areas.” By around 10:00 a.m., the resort had taken on the lively atmosphere typical of a three-day holiday weekend.
