After getting off the No. 13 Single Lift—where a long line had already formed before operation began—I followed along the narrow 380 m-long course Adventure Isle (pictured), and imagining the “sea of powder” waiting for me on the other end had my heart racing. The dry snow that had been falling since morning eased around 9:00 a.m., and patches of blue sky began to appear overhead.

Exiting Adventure Isle, I emerged onto a perfectly smooth powder line blanketed by about 50 cm of fresh snow that had accumulated since yesterday. Dropping into the trees on the right leads to Powder Theater, while heading into the trees on the left brings you to Powder Wave 2 (pictured). The latter is relatively wide for a tree area, with generous spacing between trees, making it a great option even for those new to tree skiing.

This morning’s Powder Wave 2 was a “deep sea of powder” far beyond my expectations. With waist-deep fresh snow offering incredible flotation—I felt like I was in a dream, plowing through clouds of powder and getting covered head to toe. Near the bottom, a skier who came down at the same time laughed and called out with a smile, “Deep powder! Very nice!”

A woman from Nagano prefecture (pictured, right) that I met first thing in the morning said to me, “I always read your reports. I saw you the other day in Shiga Kogen—those groomed runs felt amazing that day.” After her friend (pictured, left) joined her and they struck a cheerful, playful pose, she suddenly switched gears, declaring, “Madarao is perfect today! The first run has to be World Cup!!” before charging off down the slope.
