Akakura Onsen has officially hit 300 cm of base depth—congratulations! The strongest and longest cold wave of the season, which delivered especially heavy snowfall to the Myoko area, boosted the officially reported base depth at Akakura Onsen Ski Resort by a full 100 cm. The day started off with calm, clear skies. Clouds clung to Mt. Myoko (2,454 m), while Mt. Kurohime just to the south (pictured, 2,053 m) came into view beautifully.

No new snow fell overnight or through the morning. The Panorama Course on the main slope (pictured) was groomed into moderately soft powder, and with it being a January weekday, skier traffic was slow to build. Even after lapping the Kumado No. 1 Quad two or three times, clean corduroy lines were still clearly visible across the slope.

The Silver Course (pictured), which branches off beside the Kumado Hut midway down the Panorama Course, remains a quiet hidden gem. When I dropped in at 9 a.m., the moderately firm groomed powder was still completely untracked, and the first tracks of the day belonged to a family from Australia (pictured) who followed shortly after.

Mechanical inspections kept the Kumado No. 4 Triple closed all day, which in turn left Utopia A and B shut as well. Clouds drifting in from the west occasionally blocked the sun, causing flat light at times. Even so, the Downhill Central Course (pictured), Sekimi Slope, and the Slalom Course were all groomed into moderately firm, easy-to-ski powder conditions.
