2024.03.01230cm / Snow Clouds

Yesterday morning’s clear skies were the first in a while, so too was the heavy snowfall that accompanied the passage of a low-pressure system along the southern coast last night. This morning, the temperature at the foot of the mountain was not so low, so I headed up to the top of the mountain wondering how the conditions would be there. I was pleasantly surprised to see around 40 cm of new snow, the most in the last three weeks! Around 8:30 (pictured), the veil of fog clinging to the mountain suddenly lifted and a sea of clouds spread out below me to the east.

I skipped the area along the Alpen Quad, where large moguls lurked under the fresh snow, and instead dropped into the ungroomed areas beside the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), where I found about 40 cm of fresh, slightly heavy snow. The heavy snow helped me stay afloat, and I was able to enjoy skiing in an almost straight line without bottoming out on the small surface bumps. The area alongside the Kurobishi Quad was groomed with a moderately firm powder snow base that was topped with 3 to 5cm of fluffy fresh snow.

I caught up with three skiers from Gifu and Hakuba Village, who told me, “We love your site. The new snow is a little heavy, but it’s still fun!” The ungroomed part of the Skyline Course also had 30 to 40 cm of heavy fresh snow, while the center portion (pictured) was groomed and in good condition, with about 3 cm of fresh snow covering a moderately packed powder snow surface.

As we skied down, I reentered the fog at the end of the Skyline and emerged aain below it at around the midpoint of the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, which had a somewhat firm, groomed wet snow base. The Sakka Slope (pictured) and Sakka Wave also had groomed wet snow surfaces, but they were starting to loosen up. The ungroomed areas on the sides were covered with 20 to 25 cm of dense, heavy new snow.
