Happo-one REPORT

2024.03.04265cm / Snowy

Who could have imagined this turn of events last month? Shortly after I arrived this morning I spoke with a member of the ski patrol, who told me, “It’s amazing today. The upper portion of the resort is pretty foggy, so have fun, but be careful.” Thanks to the recent snowfall, Omusubi, which I thought for sure was already done for the season, reopened yesterday, 3/3 (Sun.).

I decided to take the southern route of Usagidaira, which had a moderately firm groomed powder snow surface covered with 10 to 15 cm of light fresh snow, to the ungroomed area alongside the Alpen Quad (pictured). With limited visibility, I had to be careful to recognize the border between the groomed and ungroomed snow, but as I dropped in, I was greeted by 50 to 60 cm of fluffy new snow!

Every time I set my edges there was a whoosh as plumes of snow rose up around me, and many people coming down the slopes had faces covered in snow. The amount of snow and the float it provided was so great that in my euphoria I forgot it was March. One person who had already skied down once and was going back up on the Alpen Quad said, “Snownavi! What an incredible day! We hit the jackpot.”

The Panorama Course and Panorama (Forest Road) Beginner Course had 15 to 20 cm of fresh snow on top of moderately packed, powder snow bases, while the Olympic Course II had 40 to 50 cm of fluffy fresh snow covering hard-packed moguls. The Sakka Slope (pictured) had excellent skiing conditions, with 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow on a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface. Overall, the atmosphere was quiet today due to the decrease in the number of international visitors since the beginning of March.
