On 11/4 (Tue.), the upper sections of Akakura Kanko Resort and other ski areas in the Myoko region received their first snowfall of the season. This morning, I took the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable, which operates through 11/9 (Sun.), up the mountain to where the upper Hotel A Course (pictured) was blanketed in fresh white snow under a vivid blue sky. The snow beautifully contrasted with the autumn foliage that is now in its final stages.

Because the snow that fell last night was quite wet, this morning’s sharp drop in temperature caused it to freeze solid—resulting in crunchy snow underfoot on the grass and rock-hard snow on the paved areas. At the start of the Champion B Course (pictured), crews were busy dismantling the “The View” facilities in preparation for the 2025–26 winter season.

From the Sky Terrace, located just beside the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable summit station, I could see a magnificent sea of clouds stretching beyond a shallow reflecting pool that had a thin layer of ice on its surface. In addition to this terrace, both “The Kitchen” and “The Hall” will be open again in the summit area for the 2025–26 winter season.

The autumn colors were at their best around 1,000m of elevation where the Akakura Kanko Hotel stands. Akakura Kanko Resort is scheduled to open for skiing on 12/19 (Fri.), subject to snow conditions. Last season, the resort opened on 12/23 (Sat.) with just the Hotel A and C Courses, and by the following day, 12/24 (Sun.), all lifts were operating and the resort was “fully open” for skiing (over 80% of the runs were skiable).
