Happy New Year! This morning I spoke with three families visiting together from Aichi and Gifu Prefectures (pictured), who told me, “We always check Snownavi! We’ve been skiing all around the HAKUBA VALLEY over the New Year holidays. For lunch today, we’re going to make and enjoy our own original pizzas at ‘Lyrical’ inside Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba you can choose all your own toppings!”

The Mt. Hieda Forest Course (pictured) was topped with 1 to 3 cm of fresh snow, and offered moderately soft, easy-to-ski groomed powder conditions. On the ungroomed Mt. Hieda Course 1, where 5 to 10 cm of light new snow had accumulated, firm, deep moguls had formed. Even so, advanced riders took it in stride, charging straight down the Mt. Hieda Forest Course before diving into Hie 1 amid cheers.

The ungroomed Itadaira Course (pictured), like Hie 1, was technical, with firm, deep moguls topped by 5 to 10 cm of light new snow. From those who dropped in, I heard comments ranging from “This is tough” to “This is fun!” On the Ikenota Slope, there was an area of thin snow cover near the midsection of the run (marked with poles), but overall it was still comfortable conditions and enjoyable to ski.

On the Ipponmatsu Course (pictured), moist snow and powder had been mixed and pressed together by the groomers, and I was able to build speed comfortably while kicking through about 1 cm of light new snow on top. On the groomed section of the Warabidaira Slope, there were no bushes or exposed dirt showing through. After that, the northerly wind strengthened, and the snowfall picked up in intensity along with it.
