Early this morning, strong radiational cooling pushed temperatures down below −10°C, and walking across the groomed snow produced a perfect powder squeak underfoot. I spoke with a couple from Aichi Prefecture, who told me, “We sometimes check your site. We come to ski at Cortina every weekend and often join backcountry tours as well.” It was a refreshing start to the morning, just before the weather is expected to take a rough turn starting tomorrow.

I hadn’t noticed the wind down at the bottom, but it was blowing strongly as I unloaded from the 3rd Quad, which began operating at 9:00 a.m. The Rabbit Course (pictured) and the Snake Course both featured moderately firm, well-packed powder grooming, and thanks to the heavy snowfall on 1/8 (Thu.), the snow coverage was more than sufficient, allowing me to link turns exactly as I wanted.

Early in the morning on the Rabbit Course, many advanced skiers and riders were charging straight down before heading back up on the No. 3 Quad for another lap. By the way, Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba is now accepting reservations for its “55th Anniversary Plan,” an all-inclusive package that includes a one-day HAKUBA VALLEY lift pass for each day of your stay, priority boarding on the 2nd Quad and 4th Pair, plus an extra dish at dinner and a bottle of FERRARI sparkling wine.

Just off the Snake Course, I spoke with a pair of backcountry guides (pictured on both ends), who told me, “We always read your reports. We’re checking our beacons right now—we’re about to head down to Uchu with a guest from Kanagawa Prefecture.” Meanwhile, the wide, freshly groomed Ikenota Slope offered moderately soft powder conditions.
