Gliding out toward the vast snowfields under the crisp morning sun today was an invigorating feeling. Although Asian Dust appeared to have reached the Hakuba Valley, it was strangely unnoticeable at Cortina in the early hours. About 1 cm of slightly damp new snow had settled on top of the opening section of the Rabbit Course (pictured), which had been groomed into a firm moist snow base.

From the mid section of the Rabbit Course (pictured) down to the bottom, the groomed snow surface was composed of moderately firm, moist snow. Due to avalanche risk, the upper section of the Snake Course and the Itadaira Ridge Course remained closed. The lower half of Snake offered similar moderately firm, groomed moist snow, while the Kamoshika Course was covered end to end with hard, medium-sized moguls.

The gentle Itadaira Forest Course (pictured), which connects from the 5th Pair unloading area to the top of the Itadaira Course, was groomed into moderately firm, moist-snow conditions, with 1 to 2 cm of slightly damp new snow on top. My skis didn’t run particularly fast, but that made it easy to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy an unhurried descent.

Both the Giant and Hie 2 courses were closed today. On the Ikenota Slope (pictured), the snow surface had been well set early on, but the higher temperatures and sunshine soon began to soften it. As of 10:30 a.m., the Itadaira Course, which faces directly into the sun, felt a bit loose and grainy, but it remained easy to ski.
