In the open area at the top of the Kids’ Park (pictured), where snow rafting was held last season, mounds of snow have been built for playing in the snow. A staff member who was doing test runs on the snow tubing course next to the sledding area told me, “We’ll make some final adjustments and then open things up.” (※Tube rentals are ¥500 for 30 minutes). Thanks to snow falling throughout the day yesterday, the officially reported snow depth increased by 20 cm to 205 cm, though the amount of new snow overnight ended up being only around 5 to 10 cm.

I spoke with a telemark skier from Matsumoto City, who was first in line for the 2nd Quad and was told, “I always read your reports! I lined up at 7:00 a.m. hoping for powder, but we didn’t get as much as I expected.” The Ikenota Slope (pictured) offered moderately soft, groomed powder conditions, and with dry snow drifting lightly on a gentle northerly breeze, it was a refreshing start to the day.

The groomed Mt. Hieda Forest Course (pictured) was also covered in soft powder snow. The tunnel of rime ice, the most beautiful I’ve seen this season, created a wonderfully otherworldly atmosphere. I wanted to take my time and enjoy a few laps here, but most people lined up for the 4th Pair charged straight through and headed for the Itadaira Course instead.

Around 5 to 10 cm of light new snow had accumulated on the ungroomed Mt. Hieda Course 1, which had hardpacked moguls formed across the base. Meanwhile, the Itadaira Course (pictured) was topped with 3 to 5 cm of light new snow, and delivered moderately soft, groomed powder conditions, drawing cheers of “Amazing!” and “Whoooo!” from riders as they passed by.
