It was a comfortable morning with occasional sunshine filtering through the clouds. The groomed Rabbit Course (pictured) was moderately firm from top to bottom, offering easy-to-ski powder conditions. While the usually busy Ikenota Slope drew most of the crowds, only a handful of people boarded the No. 3 Quad, which starts at 9:00 a.m., allowing for relaxed turns on Rabbit–which felt like a private run.

With an average pitch of 8 degrees and a total length of 700 m, the Snake Course is a beginner run where the scenery shifts from the ridgeline at the top to open snowfields in the mid section (pictured), then into forest toward the bottom. Here too, the groomed surface was moderately firm and very easy to ski. Although there was no snowfall overnight, the ungroomed, steeper Kamoshika Course branching off partway down also held pleasantly soft powder conditions.

I crossed paths with a skier from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured), whom I had previously met at Hakunori’s “Wooden Sled Experience” event on 1/25 (Sun.). They told me, “I’m enjoying the telemark skis and boots I picked up secondhand. I’ve got plenty more skis at home, too.” The Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) was likewise easy to ski, with moderately firm, groomed powder conditions.

At Cornice Cafe (pictured), located at the base of the Ikenota Slope, you can grab coffee, cafe lattes, matcha lattes, and other drinks, along with hot sandwiches (ham & cheese, chicken & cheese, and kimchi cheese). The hot sandwiches are made to order and handed over piping hot in about 10 minutes.
