Waiting for the weather to clear, I began my report at Happo today later than usual, around 10:30 a.m. Last night brought far more snow than expected, with 30 to 35cm accumulated in front of the Kurobishi Cafeteria. Because of the heavy snowfall, it was impossible to drive up, so I had to hike from partway up the Kurobishi Forest Road—quite a ways below the slope.

Digging all the way down to the ground revealed about 6cm of icy, granular snow beneath the roughly 30cm of new snow on top. Total snow accumulation measured 40 to 45cm on the upper parts of both Kurobishi and Usagidaira, 10 to 22cm on the Skyline Course, 15 to 20cm at Kitaone Kogen, and 3 to 5cm on the Sakka Slope. Over at Kitaone Kogen, the “Happo Kotatsu Café” is scheduled to open again this season during the peak period beginning in late December.

Looking nationwide, the season’s first snowfall was observed on 11/18 (Tue.) in Akita, Sendai, Yamagata, and Nagano, and on 11/19 (Wed.) in Fukushima. For Akita, Yamagata, and Nagano, the timing matched last year exactly; in Sendai it arrived one day earlier than last year, and in Fukushima one day later. Just as the mountains saw their first snow at the same timing as last year’s heavy-snow season, the first snowfall in the cities matched up to last year as well.
