Kandatsu Snow Resort, known for its numerous runs steep enough to appeal to intermediate and advanced skiers, opened on 12/13 (Sat.), reached “fully open” status on 12/28 (Sun.), and today recorded its deepest snowpack of the season at 105 cm. I spoke with a resort staff member who commented, “The snow fell continuously from yesterday morning through to this morning, and we picked up around 50 cm in total.” With the long weekend starting tomorrow, conditions across the mountain are coming together nicely.

At present, all runs are open except Andromeda, Milky Way, Super Antares, and Tree Hercules. The area between Procyon and Pollux (pictured) had about 5 cm of light, dry new snow on top of a moderately firm, packed powder base. Using the C Lift (quad, 1,100 m), I was able to enjoy some smooth and comfortable warm-up laps.

I carried good speed down the moderately pitched Pegasus, where about 5 cm of light new snow sat on top of well-set packed powder, then dropped into the ungroomed Hercules (second photo, background). I found what I was hoping for – an excellent, thoroughly enjoyable powder run with some 40 to 50 cm of soft, fluffy new snow combined covering a forgiving base.

Dropping in from the E Lift (pair, 860 m), which started running at 9:00 a.m., I found some exposed brush at the top of Orion (pictured). It was easy to avoid, and once I committed to my line, I was rewarded with the fantastic float. Shouts of “Wow, this is so fluffy!” and “Feels amazing!” rang out around me as big clouds of snow billowed up in the air. The D Lift visible in the far background of the photo operates on weekends and holidays.
