Tsugaike REPORT

2023.06.14Tsugaike Nature Park / Overcast / Light Rain

Summer in Tsugaike has officially started! The Tsugaike Ropeway began its daily summer operation on 6/10 (Sat.), with WOW! opening for business on the same day. (*WOW! is only open on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of June). Furthermore, the TSUGAIKE OUTDOOR VILLAGE, located around the gondola mid-station, has also begun accepting reservations. (*Tsugaike’s summer season is scheduled to come to an end on 10/22.)

The impressive fields of Mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) are usually at their best in mid to late June, but with this year’s early snowmelt, they are already past their peak (pictured, first photo). On the other hand, the fresh, green leaves of the trees throughout the park, including the beautiful dakekanba (Erman’s birch) have begun to unfurl, and other alpine plants are starting to emerge, making the walk through the Nature Park enjoyable even in the light rain. (The rainy season began on 6/8.)

On days like this, I like to look out for sankayo, sometimes referred to as “skeleton flowers” (pictured), whose white petals turn translucent when wet. A member of the park staff informed me that the best time to see them is five to seven days after they bloom, before the petals begin to fall. Currently, they can be found blooming around the Mizubasho marsh and on the Northern Alps side of the route around the Watasuge marsh.

Other flowers in bloom along the route included: ryukinka (marsh marigold), takanezakura (Japanese alpine cherry), kinugasaso (Paris Japonica), shirane-aoi (glaucidium), and enreiso (wake robin). In addition, the bridge was rebuilt over the Kusu River, and the restroom there was opened on 6/10 (Sat.), and with the snow continuing to melt, the entire route has been opened, allowing visitors to walk all the way to the Tenbo Marsh. (*Some sections of snow remain.) Incidentally, the shirane-aoi are now at their best along the south-facing slope of the Yase-one ridge route.
