Shiga REPORT

2024.01.0385cm / Cloudy

With the opening of the Hasuike Ski Resort on New Year’s Day and the opening of Terakoya and Tannenomori Okojo ski resorts today, 1/3 (Wed.), all ski resorts in Shiga Kogen are now open for skiing! (*Only the Nanamagari Course is currently open at the Giant Ski Area.) At Yakebitaiyama, the groomed slopes were so pleasant that everyone seemed to have a smile on their face as they went.

In other news, “First Track” sessions started at Yakebitaiyama today, 1/ 3(Wed.). It was impressive to see the advanced skiers, who seemed to be the majority of the participants, accelerating down the giant slalom course in one go. This morning the sky was thick with clouds and the thermometer showed -5.0℃, but because there was no wind, it felt surprisingly comfortable.

If you time it right, you can leave the First Gondola summit station and be the first to get on the Panorama Course (pictured) near the Second Gondola, or even the Fourth Slope at Okushiga Kogen. I spoke with a skier who participated in the First Track session and told me, “The groomed snow felt great! Now I’m heading over to Okushiga Kogen.”

The Giant Slalom course, which is over 2km long, had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface along the first part of the course, and similarly firm, groomed wet snow with a powdery feel after passing under the First Gondola. The Panorama Course (pictured) also had a powder snow surface at the beginning, and although there were some areas where the snow cover was thin, it did not bother me and I was able to really enjoy my runs.
