Sugadaira REPORT

2024.01.3175cm / Partly Cloudy

In advance of the upcoming public test ride event season for next year’s models, events for dealers are being held during the week this week at various locations in Sugadaira. This photo shows the dealer-specific test ride event for Ogaska Ski, which is taking place today and tomorrow at the bottom of the Taro Course. The top portion of the Taro Course was closed, but the remainder was open with firm, groomed wet snow.

At the base of the Ura Taro Slope, HEAD along with brands Völkl, K2, and LINE are holdig a joint test-ride event for dealers. General visitors can try out new products from ATOMIC on 2/1 (Thu.) to 2/4 (Sun.) and from BLOSSOM, KOMORI, BLIZZARD, NORDICA, TECNICA and ELAN on 2/3 (Sat.) and 2/4 (Sun.). In addition, the “JSP_SKI FORUM ON SNOW 2024” will be held on 2/17 (Sat.) and 2/18 (Sun.) and will feature a gathering of 27 brands at this same location. I spoke with a staff member (pictured) from a ski shop in Niigata Prefecture who attended the test-ride event, and was told, “We have many backcountry-oriented customers near the Myoko area, so I came here to try out the K2 powder models.” It was easy to ski at Ura Taro Family East & West, where the groomed wet snow surface was still moderately firm around 9:30 a.m.

Let’s go back to the start of the morning. The moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface of Ura Taro Schi Heil (pictured) felt great, and because the slope was empty I was able to ratchet up the speed. The temperature as measured at the top of Mt. Taro was -2℃, which was warm for this point of the season in Sugadaira Kogen.
