Shiga REPORT

2024.02.18180cm / Sunny

This morning I spoke with the father of a family who participated in the snow groomer ride experience program, who told me, “We came yesterday and stayed overnight at the Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel.” His child (pictured) got into the driver’s seat, and simply exclaimed, “Wow, it’s so cool!” The parents, on the other hand, were more interested in the staff’s explanations about the groomer’s 40 to 50 million yen price tax and the 30 liters of fuel it uses per hour.

By the way, those who join the Prince Kids Club (*free of charge) can reserve and participate in this snow groomer ride experience held on Kids Ski Day. Other benefits include free rental of kids’ skis and snowboards and a kids’ free drink bar. Furthermore, Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort, a member resort of Prince Snow Resorts, offers a Kids Free Program where all visiting children of elementary school age and younger receive free lift tickets at any time!

The fun for kids doesn’t stop there, as the free Family Snow Park has a 70-meter-long moving snow escalator that shuttles kids to the top of the hill, where they can sled down with sleds and snowriders, which are also free to use. (*You can also bring your own sleds from home. Open until 3/17) By 9:00 a.m. today, the weather was warm and sunny, and the Buna Course (pictured), Panorama Course, Shirakaba Course, and Karamatsu Course all had slushy snow conditions.

Going back to the start of the day, during the First Track period, the Olympic Course (pictured) had a hard packed groomed surface of fine-grained granular snow, while the Giant Slalom Course had similar snow, but was only moderately firm. As I boarded the gondola again, a fellow skier said to me, “The first track felt good.”
