Sugadaira REPORT

2024.02.19100cm / Rain Clouds

I was greeted good morning by a member of the ski patrol today who told me that the Fujimi, Champion (pictured) and Dogleg courses were restricted today for a competition that was taking place. He added, “I hope the weather holds up.” The were slivers of blue sky visible in the early morning, but they were quickly covered by thick clouds coming in from the south.

To get to GO-no-Hara from the Omatsu No. 1 Quad off-ramp, the competition slope had to be crossed, but it was possible to pass through except for when the racers were skiing. It was easy to set my edges on the loose, groomed granular snow surface of GO-no-Hara, and the skiing was good. I was very impressed by the speed of the skiers warming up for their competition runs.

I had a conversation with a staff member who was working at the Omatsu No. 1 Quad off-ramp, who told me, “It’s so warm that it’s hard to believe that it’s Sugadaira in February. I was worried about the melting snow, but the groomed courses are well maintained and easy to ski.” However, the Holiday Course, located on the lower part of Pine Beak, did have some areas of thin snow cover.

In addition, the groomed Omatsuyama and Tsubakuro access course also had a few spots with thinning snow. Both the Tsubakuro Celine and Tsubakuro Family courses were groomed with well-packed granular snow surfaces that were firmer than the Omatsu Slope, even after they had begun to loosen up. Around 10:00 a.m., it began to drizzle.
